The Dean’s Cup Invitational returns to the USDGC for 2015 and so do many of the teams from last year.
Once again the Winthrop University disc golf team will host the event, which also features returning champ Colorado State University. Augusta University (formerly Georgia Regents) returns as well. They narrowly lost to CSU in the 2014 Dean’s Cup final. Rounding out the teams, is the University of South Carolina’s disc golf team, making their first Dean’s Cup appearance.
In the Dean’s Cup, teams play in the collegiate team format which features four players playing one round instead of singles or traditional doubles. As host, Winthrop gets an automatic Dean’s Cup bid, while the other three spots are based on performance during the previous season.
The Dean’s Cup consists of two rounds. The first round begins Friday morning before the Performance Flight begins teeing off. The second, and final round begins Saturday morning, again before the Performance Flight begins teeing off.
Friday’s match-ups are CSU vs. Winthrop, and Augusta vs. South Carolina. The winners of each match will face off for the final round, with the remaining two teams playing for third place.
The format works by designating two players to tee off on the even holes, with the other two assigned to teeing on the odd holes. Play alternates between the pairs, with each pair throwing from the best of the previous throws.
