If you followed our news, photos and updates from La Mirada Open, the European Open and the European Masters, you might have noticed that there’s was one attendee at all three of these events that stood out from the rest of the field. We’re talking about the Tennessee native Catrina Allen, who’s been the only female competitor to attend a total of 3 events so far on the Disc Golf World Tour this year.
Video: Catrina Allen at the 2016 European Masters
Catrina has regularly proven to be a fierce competitor on the FPO events and her total of 17 top-podium finishes for 2016 speak volumes of her dominance this year. But it’s not only on the FPO side where Catrina has left her co-competitors behind her on the scoreboards. At the European Masters, Catrina bested a total of 83 male players, while the number guys behind Catrina in the final standings at European Open and La Mirada Open were 57 and 60 respectively.
A Wild Card from Grip EQ, USDGC & DGWT Staff
For the USDGC, acting also as the Disc Golf World Tour Championship, Catrina needed to secure a spot through the Monday Qualifying event. However qualifying was very competitive on Monday and Catrina was unsuccessful in submitting a top five score.
Luckily for Catrina, Grip EQ still had an unused Tour Sponsor wild card that they, in association with the USDGC and World Tour staff, decided to award to Catrina, despite falling short at the qualifying event. When Tour Director Jussi Meresmaa approached Catrina late Monday evening to break the news of the wild card, Catrina was visibly moved and happily accepted the opportunity to take part in this historic event.
The tournament action will kick off tomorrow on Wednesday here at the Winthrop Gold course in Rock Hill, South Carolina. We wish the best of luck to Catrina and the rest of the field for the 4 tournament rounds to come!
