With his positive can-do attitude, Ken Rollins is the kind of volunteer any event would like to have. The USDGC has been fortunate enough to have his talents for the first week of October for the last 7 years.
“He’s always asking, ‘What’s next? How can I help?’ Those are the type of questions that are priceless to a person in my position,” said USDGC volunteer coordinator Paul Bergey.
During the Players Banquet Tuesday evening, Rollins of Westerville, OH, was awarded the USDGC’s Golden Rake award for outstanding volunteer service.
“Thank you very much. I so appreciate it,” said Rollins when he accepted the award.
Rollins is one of those long-time USDGC spotters, whose name is automatically linked to the hole he spots, which for him is the island hole, Hole 17. With so much danger after Hole 17’s tee shot, he’s probably one of the more active spotters on the course. Tension also rides high on that hole and Rollins consistently performs his duties with class.
Before he assumes his Hole 17 post, Rollins is one of the first people to arrive on the course where he’ll often set out tee signs, water jugs, and the state flags associated with the Winthrop holes.
“Ken comes from Ohio every year and works extremely hard to make the event the best it can be. He is a selfless go-getter who cares deeply about the game and the people who play it,” said USDGC Event Director Jonathan Poole.
